Your next job might find you

I Will Find You GIF

Happy Hump Day {{first_name | Toaster}} 🐪 ,

They say the best things in life come when you’re not looking for them. This can also be true of job hunting.

We keep our LinkedIn’s updated, turn on the green “Open to Work” banner, go to every networking event, apply within minutes of the job being posted, and tailor our resumes. Yet, many jobs aren’t found by spending a full weekend on your application.

Think about some of the best opportunities you've had in your career. Chances are, at least one came from somewhere you weren't expecting. A former colleague sent you a message, someone saw your work and reached out, a friend made an introduction, or a recruiter came across your profile. You weren't necessarily looking for a job; you were just doing your job and something better came along.

That's because careers aren't really search engines. They’re relationships, timing, experience, and a little bit of luck. Yet our hiring systems are built almost entirely around search.

Candidates search for jobs. Companies search for candidates. Somewhere in the middle, both sides spend an absurd amount of time trying to make themselves discoverable to each other.

There's something slightly backwards about the expectation that the best candidates should always be available. Our work as recruiters has taught us that some of the most talented people aren't applying to 50 jobs a week. They're busy leading teams, building products, getting sh*t done, or even taking their PTO and disconnecting from work entirely.

And they aren't necessarily unhappy with their jobs. Needing a job and being willing to leave for the right opportunity are two very different things. The former puts you in a position of having to chase, while the latter creates the possibility of stumbling upon something you didn’t know you wanted.

Realistically, not everyone has the luxury of waiting for the right opportunity to find them. A job pays the bills, people get laid off, or there is a sense of urgency to leave toxic workplaces. Sometimes you just need a paycheck.

But that shouldn’t mean you have to spend your life applying to jobs just in case something better comes along. There should be a middle ground: a way to keep your options open without constantly searching, scrolling and submitting applications. That's part of the thinking behind Toast Talent Marketplace.

A lot of the women in our talent pool aren't actively looking for a new role. They're choosing to be there because they're open to the right one. Recruiters can discover them based on their experience, skills and potential rather than waiting for them to find the right job posting and spend an afternoon tailoring a resume to it.

If you're not actively looking right now but you're open to seeing what else is out there, you can join our candidate pool and create a free profile here. Keep it updated as your experience, skills, and expectations change, and when an opportunity comes along, you’ll already be on the radar.

We’re not telling everyone to stop job hunting. We’re saying there should be another way to get hired — one where you can keep doing your thing while making sure the right people can find you when the time comes.
