Each week, we try to find something worth thinking about: what’s happening in tech, how hiring and the workforce are changing, or what it means to be a woman in today’s world. Sometimes we go off on a tangent and write about the moon.
This week, as we looked to find something new to write about, we looked backwards at how much has happened this year, and there are a few recurring themes:
AI is constantly changing how we hire by making judgement calls in the hiring process and automating how candidates are evaluated.
The job market is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate with recruitment scams, reduced bargaining power, job titles and descriptions being masculinized, and job seekers being asked to do extreme things to prove themselves.
Companies are pushing the boundaries of how decisions get made, governments are testing the limits of their power over technology, and we’re watching a handful of people and companies accumulate unprecedented influence. We saw Anthropic push back against the U.S. government, Meta move away from end-to-end encryption, countries increasingly discussing what to do about digital sovereignty, and the trillionaire-club welcoming its first member.
When you put all of those stories next to each other, it starts to feel like more than a collection of weird headlines. We’ve realized that we are spending so much time reacting to the future of work that we’ve forgotten we can actively influence it. AI, hiring, psychological safety, career paths, etc. aren't separate problems; they're all examples of the workplace being redesigned in real time.
But we can stop treating the future of tech as something that is going to happen to us. The future is being built right now through the products we create, the systems we adopt, the policies we write, the companies we build, and the decisions we make about what technology should and shouldn’t do. We’re already living in the future; the question is what we do with it.
What should hiring look like when AI can evaluate a candidate before a human ever sees their resume? What should work feel like when technology can make us more connected and more disconnected at the same time? What should we protect as technology becomes increasingly embedded in every part of our lives? And what kind of industry do we actually want to build from here?
These are big questions, and there probably aren't neat answers.
This is what we're getting into at this year's Toast Summit. Our theme is is Shaping the Future of Tech - not predicting it, not waiting for it, and definitely not just reacting to whatever Silicon Valley decides is next. Instead, we’re bringing together women and allies who want to build smarter and help design what comes next. Because women can’t change the system unless we are in it.
The future of work isn't some far-off place we're waiting to arrive. We can watch tech take shape, or we can shape it.
